IFCO: Empowering family-based care for every child around the world.

IFCO’s vision is that children in alternative care across the world would have the choice to live in family-based care. We believe this form of care offers children the best opportunity to grow and prosper. We believe that alternative care should be an inclusive effort by all and that all voices, including the voices of care-experienced.

Organisational Story/History

IFCO is over 40 years old. Our roots are as a foster care organisation representing foster care as a family-based alternative if a child, for whatever reason should come into care until they return to their family or age out of care.

Over those decades, we have grown to include youth voices in all areas of our organisation including currently having a careleaver as President, as a Treasurer, and two dedicated Director seats on the board. We run regional and international conferences with parallel youth conferences up to the age of 29. We also partner with and organise care leaver projects and advocacy campaigns for transitioning out of care and care leaver rights and issues.

We are a members based organisation with online and in person events. We hold discussion groups, conferences, webinars as well as projects and campaigns for members and the public, including foster carers, children in care, care leavers, social workers, academics, professionals, and more.
